Course Description:

Secondary Language Arts: CC Literacy is a follow-up to Common Core State Standards – English Language Arts training. It consists of seven modules with activities that are asynchronous and self-paced. Each module contains individual and peer participation with content pages, video workshops, discussions and reflections. Some modules take longer than others to complete, planning ahead and dedicating for weekly activities is highly recommended. Although the course is self-paced,there is an online instructor who will provide feedback and monitor student progress through the modules. Many activities in this course are useful in daily responsibilities as a classroom teacher. However, most activities require independent studies and content.

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to the Common Core State Standards which are rigorous, research-based standards designed to prepare the students of California and the rest of the country with the knowledge and skills for college and the workforce. They are internationally benchmarked to ensure that students will be globally competitive. They form a clear and consistent educational framework that defines what students should understand and be able to do in their study of mathematics.

This course looks at the Common Core through the lens of the Standards for Mathematical Practice. The mathematics discussed include, the use of number lines throughout the standards, a close look at Number and Operations in K-5, Expressions and Equations in Middle School and Building Functions in High School. The course takes participants through an example of mathematical modeling and introduces them to assessment consortium for the Common Core.

572 – Common Core Standards and Depth of Knowledge: Mathematics

Course Description:

Participants will examine and consider how Depth of Knowledge (DOK) can be understood and applied in K-12 mathematics classrooms to insure that instruction occurs with the required rigor. Participants will understand Norman Webb’s four DOK levels, how they grow in cognitive complexity and how these levels differ from and add to Bloom’s Taxonomy. Participants will learn about the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium and how it is developing an assessment system based on the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the DOK levels of complexity. Participants will learn new strategies through video examples, in-depth readings, and activities to help them apply their learning to their own classroom and begin to integrate the DOK levels and the CCSS standards into their practice.
