TEAL District – Dance Integration in the K-6 Classroom

Grade Level: K-6

Course Description:

Participants will gain a basic understanding of the integration and benefits of dance and movement activities in the elementary classroom. Exploration of three elements of dance (space, time, energy), selected kinesthetic principles, and basic choreography will help educators identify the ways in which dance practices and dance vocabulary can be integrated with other areas of the curriculum. Strategies and activities that integrate dance and movement with other content areas are offered and modeled. Using basic academic language of dance, participants will develop and practice skills in the aesthetic valuing of dance. A walk-through of the California Dance standards, the Common Core Standards, and cross-curricular standards is provided, along with a detailed guide for creating an arts integrated lesson plan. The module includes the “Dancing into Science” integrated lesson planning worksheet.

TEAL District – Introduction to Arts Integration in the K-6 Classroom

Course Description:

Participants will learn the Kennedy Center definition of arts integration and the universal importance of the arts in our lives, including the classroom and careers. This module explores the ways in which arts integration supports the development and use of the 4Cs and increases access to the curriculum for all students, including English Language Learners. Participants will explore connections between the arts and other content area standards, careers, creativity, principles of learning, DOK, and Bloom’s Taxonomy.

TEAL District – Introduction to STEAM in the K-6 Classroom

Grade Level: K-6

Course Description:

In this module, participants will gain an understanding of the relationship between STEM and STEAM education, and the critical elements of both. An overview of the process approaches that characterize the building blocks of STEAM is provided, identifying the ways in which practices in the arts, engineering, science, and project-based learning converge. Recommendations for creating Makerspaces are given. A walk-through of the California Visual Arts standards, the Common Core Standards, and the Next Generation Science standards is provided, along with a detailed guide for creating an arts integrated lesson plan. The module includes the “Building Bridges” unit developed by the Downey Unified School District’s STEAM Team and numerous other STEAM sample lessons and activities.

TEAL District – Media Arts Integration through Digital Storytelling in the K-6 Classroom

Grade Level: K-6

Course Description:

Participants will explore the use of digital storytelling to support K-6 student literacy, beginning with an introduction to the elements of movies and filmmaking, which includes animation, the elements of story and plot, and the principles of basic film production and digital storytelling. Throughout the module are activities and examples that can be used by the participant and applied in the classroom. Ways in which to help students provide critical feedback are suggested, along with sample project timelines to guide the launch of digital storytelling in the classroom. A walkthrough of standards is not included, as during the development of this module, the state of California did not include media arts standards in the Visual and Performing Arts framework.

An overview of the developmental stages for children’s vocal abilities is included. A walk-through of the California Music standards, the Common Core Standards, and cross-curricular standards is provided, along with a detailed guide for creating an arts integrated lesson plan. The module includes the “Scoring Stories: Making Music for Text” integrated lesson planning worksheet.

TEAL District – Social Emotional Learning in the K-6 Classroom

Course Description:

The basic elements of social and emotional learning (SEL) as described by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and the ways in which the visual and performing arts can be utilized in the context of classroom SEL are explored in this module. Program guides and other resources from CASEL are included. Social and emotional learning lessons and activities that correlate with art disciplines are provided in addition to downloadable and online resources for instruction and application. An integrated lesson planning worksheet that incorporates SEL competencies is also available as a download.

TEAL District – Theatre Integration in the K-6 Classroom

Course Description:

Participants will gain a basic understanding of the integration and benefits of theatre and creative dramatics in the elementary classroom. Beginning with a focus on “play”, the module guides learners through the tools and practices of actors, including non-verbal communication through pantomime and tableaus as well as verbal communication activities that help students build their “stage voice”. An exploration of storytelling through formal and informal theatre identifies key roles that encourage self-expression, collaboration, and communication as creative drama is integrated with other content areas. A walk-through of the California Theatre Arts standards, the Common Core Standards, and cross-curricular standards is provided, along with a detailed guide for creating an arts integrated lesson plan. The module includes the “Enter Stage Right – We Know You Know” integrated lesson planning worksheet.

Participants will explore the foundation of the visual arts through the elements of art and principles of design and the use of fundamental art-making techniques and materials. An emphasis on teaching literacy using the visual arts is supported with instructional strategies that include visual thinking strategies, See-Wonder-Think, and Question Formulation Technique. Guidelines are offered for aligning questioning activities with students’ developmental stages.
